SafePoint seeks $650m from Nature Coast Re 2026-2 after two upsizings

SafePoint Insurance Company is now targeting $650 million from its Nature Coast Re Ltd. Series 2026-2 catastrophe bond, having raised the deal's size twice since it launched at $250 million, according to Artemis.

A catastrophe bond, sometimes called a cat bond, is a form of collateralized reinsurance: investors put up capital that an insurer can draw on if a defined catastrophe occurs, and in return they earn a spread above a benchmark rate. If no qualifying event happens, the capital is returned. SafePoint uses the structure to transfer hurricane risk off its own balance sheet.

What the deal covers

Nature Coast Re Ltd. is offering two tranches of notes to cover named-storm losses across the states where SafePoint and the two reciprocal exchanges it operates do business. Coverage runs on an indemnity, per-occurrence basis over a four-year period beginning December 1.

The Class AA tranche, initially sized at $100 million, is now targeted at $300 million. Its initial base expected loss is 0.73%, and the spread guidance has been fixed at 3.75%, down from an opening range of 4% to 4.75%.

The Class A tranche opened at $150 million and is now being marketed at $350 million. Its initial base expected loss is 1.66%, and the spread has been set at 6.25%, the low end of a revised range that itself was already below the original 6.75% to 7.5% guidance.

Why the upsizing matters

The deal would be SafePoint's largest cat bond sponsorship to date and its sixth issued under the Nature Coast Re vehicle. The combination of a rising size target and falling price guidance in the same transaction is the clearest available signal of where investor demand stands: SafePoint came to market asking for $250 million and the market effectively offered more than twice that at tighter terms.

For Florida carriers, that dynamic matters. The state's property insurance market has spent several years under pressure from litigation costs, storm losses and carrier exits, and reinsurance pricing has reflected that stress. A Florida-focused insurer securing $650 million of multi-year named-storm cover at spreads below its own initial guidance suggests the cat bond market is currently absorbing Florida wind risk more readily than the traditional reinsurance market's recent pricing would imply.

What to watch

The deal has not yet closed, and the final size and pricing will depend on where investor orders land. What is not yet established is whether the pricing achieved here will translate into broader relief on traditional reinsurance renewals for Florida carriers, or whether the cat bond market's appetite reflects conditions specific to this transaction and this sponsor. Carriers and brokers watching the January 1 renewal season should treat this as a data point rather than a trend confirmation.
