Helios Underwriting doubles pre-tax profit in H1 2026 on Lloyd's syndicate gains

Helios Underwriting, the publicly traded vehicle that gives investors access to a portfolio of Lloyd's syndicates, more than doubled its profit before tax in the first half of 2026, according to Reinsurance News. The company reported profit before tax of £11 million for H1 2026, against £4.4 million in the same period a year earlier, with the improvement attributed to higher estimated syndicate profits.

Net asset value per share came in at £2.70 for the period, net of a 10p dividend, compared with £2.63 at year-end 2025. The 6.5% NAV total return equates to 17p per share. Helios received £40 million in net underwriting profits in May 2026 from the 2023 year of account, and the company expects the 2024 year of account to produce another strong return.

The total capital return to shareholders in 2026 is 24p per share, which includes the 10p dividend paid in H1, a forthcoming tender offer and share buybacks completed to date. That compares with 20p per share returned in 2025.

Chief Executive Officer Louis Tucker, quoted by Reinsurance News, described the 2024 year of account as having experienced "above average losses," citing hurricanes Helene and Milton, each generating market-wide insured losses of $20 billion, and the Baltimore Bridge Collapse, which Tucker called "the costliest loss ever to have hit the marine liability insurance market." He also noted that much of the estimated $40 billion in California wildfire losses, which occurred in early 2025, falls to 2024 year policies. Despite that, Tucker said the mid-point profit forecast for the 2024 year of account has improved through the half year and is tracking toward a strong ultimate result.

On the 2025 year of account, Tucker noted a lower incidence of major losses compared with 2024 and expressed optimism about the rating environment. For 2026, he said catastrophe losses have run below recent average levels and that overall forecast results remain on plan, while losses from the Middle East conflict have been partially offset by improved rating and additional marine transit premiums.

Helios also flagged investment income as a growing earnings contributor. Tucker pointed to higher bond yields combined with substantial syndicate reserves as providing both a loss buffer and a meaningful income stream, and said the company expects investment returns to continue contributing materially to Lloyd's profitability.

On the operational side, Helios reported progress in de-leveraging to reduce financing costs, continued acquisitions of limited liability vehicles and freehold capacity to increase exposure to what it describes as the strongest syndicates in the market, and ongoing development of syndicate research and portfolio analytics using automation.

The results carry a few implications worth tracking. The pipeline profit structure at Lloyd's means cash from 2024 and 2025 underwriting years will not reach Helios until 2027 and 2028, so the NAV trajectory over the next two years depends heavily on how those years of account develop and close. Tucker's commentary on pricing is also worth noting: he acknowledged softening across most classes over the past year while maintaining that rating remains robust. Whether that softening accelerates into 2027 is the question that will determine whether the current pipeline translates into the returns the company is projecting.

No other trade publications had reported on these interim results at the time of writing.
