OAK Global names Chief Risk and Compliance Officer and promotes underwriting planning head

OAK Global has added two senior leaders to its Lloyd's platform, according to Reinsurance News, in appointments designed to sharpen governance and underwriting discipline as the firm scales.

What changed

Fraser Scott has been promoted internally to Director of Underwriting Planning and Performance. In that role, he will coordinate business planning and performance management across OAK Global's underwriting portfolios, which sit within Lloyd's Syndicates 2843 and 1440. His remit includes aligning portfolio monitoring with strategic planning and working directly with the firm's Active Underwriters, the senior underwriters who hold formal responsibility for each syndicate's book of business at Lloyd's.

John Coe has been hired as Chief Risk and Compliance Officer. A qualified actuary with 20 years of experience in the London Market and at Lloyd's, Coe previously served as Head of Enterprise Risk Management at Munich Re Specialty - Global Markets and has held senior risk roles at Asta Capital and Tokio Marine Kiln. His focus at OAK Global will be governance, risk oversight, and engagement with the Lloyd's market and UK regulators.

Why it matters

Cathal Carr, Founder, Chief Executive Officer and Group Chief Underwriting Officer of OAK Global, framed the hires in terms of infrastructure rather than headcount: "These appointments strengthen two closely connected areas of our business: disciplined underwriting performance and robust, forward-looking risk management."

He added that as OAK Global grows, "it is increasingly important that we have clear enterprise-wide oversight, strong governance and the frameworks to support informed decision-making and accountability, and these new roles reflect that buildout for our business."

The pairing of an underwriting performance director with a dedicated chief risk officer is a structural choice. Lloyd's syndicates operate under close regulatory scrutiny, and the market has pushed managing agents, the firms that run syndicates on behalf of capital providers, to demonstrate that risk and underwriting functions are clearly separated and properly resourced.

What to watch

OAK Global has not disclosed the current size of its syndicates or its growth targets, so the scale of the buildout these roles are meant to support remains unclear. Whether the new structure translates into expanded underwriting authority or new lines of business is the question worth watching in the months ahead.
