Mapfre Takes a Minority Stake in Tuio to Study AI-Driven Insurance Sales
By Felipe Bernal, . Insurance Wire.
Mapfre, the Madrid-based international insurer, has agreed to acquire a minority position in Tuio, a Spanish digital insurance startup that has built a notable share of its business through AI chatbots and large language models (LLMs), the AI systems behind tools like ChatGPT. Insurance Innovation Reporter, Reinsurance News, Insurance Journal and Carrier Management all covered the announcement.
What the deal is
Mapfre will purchase 38.9% of Tuio's share capital through a direct acquisition of shares from existing holders, according to Reinsurance News. The financial terms were not disclosed, Insurance Journal reported. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals.
Tuio currently operates in Spain. Insurance Journal noted that the startup gained wider industry recognition earlier this year after receiving approval from OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, and that more than 20% of its new clients now come through AI assistants.
Carrier Management noted the deal comes just a week after Mapfre revealed a separate $1.5 billion agreement to acquire U.S.-based Safety Insurance Group, signaling an active acquisition period for the Spanish carrier.
Why Mapfre structured it this way
Carlos Cendra Falcón, Scouting and Investment Lead at Mapfre, spoke with Insurance Innovation Reporter at ITC Vegas 2026 and was direct about the rationale. The stake is about proximity, not control.
"We just wanted to have a stake that made us able to be close to them and getting first-hand information," he said.
Mapfre holds no veto rights, and the relationship is nonexclusive, Cendra Falcón explained. Tuio retains its independence. The ownership percentage reflects the structure of the transaction and the negotiations around it, rather than any particular strategic threshold.
On the broader question of AI as a distribution channel, Cendra Falcón was measured. "The trend is there," he said. "People are using LLMs. People are starting to compare and to buy using them. But we are just in the very first stage."
He cautioned against assuming AI-mediated purchasing will suit every customer or every product. Consumer lines, he expects, will feel the shift sooner than complex commercial purchases, and actual adoption will depend heavily on how willing customers are to transact through an AI interface.
What it means for carriers watching distribution
At the time Cendra Falcón spoke with Insurance Innovation Reporter, roughly 15 to 20% of Tuio's sales were already arriving through LLMs. That figure is small in absolute terms but notable for how quickly it appeared, and it is the kind of data point that is difficult to generate without being inside a company that is actually running the experiment.
For Mapfre, the structure of this deal reflects a deliberate choice: buy access to the learning without absorbing the startup into a large corporate machine. A minority stake with no veto rights keeps Tuio moving at its own pace while giving Mapfre a front-row view of what AI-driven distribution actually looks like in practice, not in a pilot.
Both companies said the transaction is intended to accelerate new technological capabilities and support Tuio's expansion, according to Reinsurance News.
The harder question, which no carrier has answered yet, is whether LLM-driven sales will stay concentrated in simple personal lines or eventually move up the complexity curve. Mapfre's bet, structured carefully to preserve optionality, is that the answer is worth paying to find out.
