John Kellington Named CEO of Insurance Standards Body ACORD

John Kellington has been named chief executive of ACORD (Association for Cooperative Operations Research and Development), the global standards-setting body whose frameworks underpin how insurers, brokers and reinsurers exchange data. The appointment was confirmed in August, with Insurance Journal, Business Insurance, and Reinsurance News all reporting the news.

Who he is

Kellington is not new to ACORD. He served as the organization's Senior Vice President of Standards Development, Information Technology, Corporate Finance and Membership from 2007 to 2010, and Insurance Journal noted he was instrumental in developing the ACORD Reference Architecture, a framework that defines how insurance technology systems should be structured to work together. He then spent the past 16 years at Cincinnati Insurance, most recently as Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer, where he applied that same architectural thinking inside a major carrier.

His conviction about standards-based design goes back further still. Insurance Innovation Reporter described consulting work at IBM in the 1990s, where he worked with the company's Insurance Application Architecture models, and later helped bring those assets into ACORD.

He succeeds Bill Pieroni, who departed in April 2025, according to Business Insurance.

What he wants to do

Kellington's stated agenda is ambitious. "Because of AI, people are expecting change," he told Insurance Innovation Reporter. His argument is that the industry's current enthusiasm for artificial intelligence creates a rare opening to ask a harder question: not just how to automate existing processes, but whether those processes were well-designed in the first place.

"Should the industry step back a little bit and ask, 'Knowing what we know now, how would we design our processes and workflows?'" he said.

His answer combines that broader reassessment with practical steps, including wider adoption of the ACORD Reference Architecture inside insurers' own technology organizations. The point, as he frames it, is that even data exchanges that technically function can still leave staff relying on manual workarounds and bolt-on tools.

The ACORD board, quoted in Insurance Journal, said Kellington "brings an uncompromising view that the insurance ecosystem is underpinned by the combination of technology and standards."

Why it matters

ACORD's membership spans hundreds of the largest insurers, reinsurers, brokers and agencies, according to Business Insurance, which means its standards decisions ripple across the industry's entire data infrastructure. A new CEO with both a standards background and a carrier CIO's perspective on where implementation breaks down is a combination the organization has not had before.

The practical significance is this: ACORD standards are only as useful as the degree to which carriers and their trading partners actually implement them consistently. Kellington's own experience at Cincinnati Insurance gives him a credible account of where the gaps are. Whether that translates into faster or more uniform adoption across the industry is the question his tenure will answer.

The AI angle is worth watching carefully. Kellington is not claiming AI solves the standards problem; he is arguing the opposite, that AI raises the stakes for getting the underlying data architecture right. Systems trained on inconsistent or manually patched data produce inconsistent outputs. That framing, if it gains traction, could push carriers to treat standards compliance as a precondition for AI investment rather than a separate IT project.

What the reporting does not yet establish is the specific initiatives or timeline Kellington plans to pursue, or how ACORD's governance structure will support a more active implementation agenda.
