Cotality Launches Platform to Automate Property Claims Supplements
By Insurance Wire Staff, . Insurance Wire.
A property claims workflow that has been largely automated at both ends still has a stubborn manual bottleneck in the middle, and Cotality is now selling a dedicated fix for it.
The company, which Claims Journal describes as a property information, analytics, and workflow solutions provider, launched Cotality Supplement this October. Carrier Management also covered the launch, describing it as "a configurable workflow portal" that gives contractors a single location to upload estimates, photos, and permit documentation, with integration into carrier estimating platforms to support low-touch processing for eligible supplements.
What the problem actually is
A supplement is what happens when a contractor, once work is underway, finds that the repairs needed exceed what the insurer originally approved and priced. The contractor submits a revised estimate; the insurer has to review it, compare line items, request supporting photos, and negotiate differences before authorizing additional payment.
That process, as Claims Journal described it, currently runs through shared email inboxes, spreadsheets, and disconnected PDF files. Adjusters must manually locate original files, compare them against new estimates, and chase missing documentation. The piece describes the cycle as "stare, compare... and often times, despair."
In normal operations, that friction adds two to four weeks to a claim's lifecycle, according to the report. During major storm events, when regional claims teams are overwhelmed, triage backlogs can stretch supplement delays to six to twelve weeks. For a homeowner waiting on repairs, that is the difference between a livable home and weeks of disruption.
Why carriers should care about the numbers
Claims Journal cited industry research published by Insurance Thought Leadership putting claims leakage, meaning money paid out incorrectly or inefficiently, at roughly 6% of total claim payments across the industry, amounting to an estimated $67 billion annually for U.S. insurers. The report attributes a substantial share of that leakage to the supplement cycle, where overworked adjusters reviewing multi-page estimates under time pressure miss duplicate line items, overlapping labor charges, and unsupported scope additions.
The financial pressure runs in both directions. Contractors face disrupted cash flow while waiting for approvals on work that has to proceed regardless. Carriers face rising loss adjustment expenses, the administrative and operational costs of handling a claim, as supplement volume grows. Both sides absorb the cost of a process that was never designed for the volume it now handles.
What Cotality says the platform does
The new platform is built around structured intake, routing, review, and reporting. Contractors submit supplements through a single portal rather than email. Carrier estimating platform integration is designed to allow straightforward supplements to move through with minimal manual handling. The platform also provides upstream analytics, though the specific metrics it tracks were not detailed in either report.
Both outlets covered the launch, and neither reported independent verification of the efficiency claims or customer adoption figures. The platform's actual effect on supplement cycle times will depend on how broadly it is adopted across carriers and contractor networks, and on whether it integrates cleanly with the estimating tools already in use on both sides.
What to watch
The harder question for the market is whether a standalone supplement platform gains enough adoption to become a standard part of the claims workflow, or whether it remains a niche tool used by carriers that already have the appetite for workflow investment. Supplement volume tends to spike after catastrophic weather events, which is exactly when claims teams have the least capacity to onboard new tools. Carriers evaluating the platform should weigh integration complexity against the cost of the status quo, particularly heading into a period when storm frequency and severity remain elevated.
