Swiss Re poaches Aon veteran Lori Goltermann for new commercial chief role

Reinsurance News reports that Swiss Re has appointed Lori Goltermann to a newly created Chief Commercial Officer role inside its Corporate Solutions unit, with a start date of January 11, 2027. She will be based in Chicago, report to Corporate Solutions Chief Executive Officer Ivan Gonzalez, and sit on the Corporate Solutions Executive Committee.

What the role covers

Goltermann's mandate, as described by Reinsurance News, spans corporate clients, governments, and distribution partners, pulling together Swiss Re's underwriting, risk expertise, technology, and global reach under a single commercial strategy. The creation of the position itself is the news: Swiss Re did not previously have a dedicated commercial officer for this division.

Insurance Business Magazine noted that the hire arrives as the Corporate Solutions unit is compressing its property and casualty pipeline, making the distribution focus of the new role particularly pointed. A chief commercial officer specifically tasked with broker and distribution relationships is a different kind of appointment than a product or underwriting hire.

Who Goltermann is

Goltermann's career at Aon, the global insurance and reinsurance brokerage, ran from 1993 to the present. She held the Chief Executive Officer role for North America and Global Regions, served as Chief Client Officer and Chief Executive of Global Enterprise Clients, and led US Commercial Risk and Health Solutions. Her most recent title at Aon was Vice Chair. She started in 1993 as a US Health and Benefits Practice Leader and held that position for close to 23 years.

Swiss Re Group Chief Executive Officer Andreas Berger called her "one of the most distinguished and accomplished executives in the insurance industry," citing "high performance, client centricity, and teamwork" across her Aon tenure.

Goltermann said she was drawn by the complexity of the risk environment facing corporate and government clients. "As corporates and governments around the world face an increasingly complex and interconnected risk environment," she said, "I am excited to join Swiss Re, a widely respected and truly global organisation, to help clients better understand, manage and transfer their risks."

What it signals

Bringing in an executive whose entire career was spent on the broker and distribution side, rather than the carrier side, tells you something about where Swiss Re thinks the competitive pressure in large commercial insurance is coming from. Corporate clients of the size Swiss Re targets have choices, and the brokers who advise them have significant influence over where risk is placed.

Creating a dedicated role to manage that relationship, and filling it with someone who spent three decades inside the brokerage world, suggests Swiss Re believes its go-to-market approach for corporate accounts needed structural attention, not just a personnel change. Whether the new role produces measurable results in distribution partnerships is the question to watch as Goltermann settles in through 2027.
