Amwins enters E&S casualty underwriting with new MGA illumin Specialty
By Insurance Wire Staff, . Insurance Wire.
Amwins has moved into in-house specialty casualty underwriting with the launch of illumin Specialty, a managing general agency writing primary general liability and excess liability coverage for complex risks on a nonadmitted basis. Reinsurance News, Business Insurance and Insurance Journal all reported the launch; the three outlets agree on the core facts and differ only in the detail they provide.
Business Insurance identified Gitig's previous role most precisely, reporting that she was head of U.S. primary liability at Aspen Insurance before joining Amwins, and that her two senior vice presidents, Randy Villanueva and Meredith McLelland, also came from Aspen. Insurance Journal added that Gitig brings more than 20 years of experience underwriting environmental and primary liability. Ryan Armijo, president of Amwins Underwriting, was quoted by Reinsurance News describing the team as bringing "more than 50 years of combined underwriting experience" and "the underwriting discipline and flexibility to structure coverage that supports difficult and hard-to-place risks where standard markets have retreated."
Gitig, in a statement carried by Reinsurance News, said building an MGA from the ground up lets the team put its collective underwriting experience into programs aimed at what the market actually needs, and that it looks forward to "delivering a fresh perspective on non-standard placements."
Business Insurance reported that the MGA will concentrate on real estate, hospitality, products risks and other complex operations, citing Gitig directly. Reinsurance News described the broader mandate as developing coverage solutions for exposures where market dislocation and technical complexity make placements more difficult, language that Insurance Journal also used in quotation marks. All three outlets confirmed the wholesale-only distribution model and the fourth-quarter target for accepting new business.
The launch is a meaningful step for Amwins. As a wholesale distributor, the firm has historically placed business with third-party underwriters; illumin Specialty puts Amwins on the underwriting side of that relationship for specialty casualty, expanding what Reinsurance News described as Amwins Underwriting's in-house specialty casualty capabilities. The decision to build around a team with a shared Aspen background suggests a deliberate bet on underwriting culture and consistency rather than assembling capacity from scratch.
The focus on real estate, hospitality and products liability is telling. These are segments where admitted carriers have pulled back sharply in recent years, leaving wholesale brokers to find nonadmitted solutions for clients who cannot get standard market terms. An MGA built specifically around those classes, led by underwriters who have worked them for decades, is positioned to absorb placements that would otherwise require brokers to shop across multiple markets.
What the reporting does not yet establish is which capacity providers are backing illumin Specialty, or on what terms. The fourth-quarter timeline for finalising capacity means that detail may not be public for weeks. Wholesale brokers evaluating the new market will want to know the paper before committing submissions, so the capacity announcement, when it comes, is the next thing to watch.
